Here&#8217;s a flannel I made a couple of years ago for my Summer Reading Program school visits; since it&#8217;s based on a Jewish folktale (and song) I think I might brush it off again for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cslpreads.org\/\">One World Many Stories<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>In this story, a man has a wonderful overcoat that he wears and wears until it&#8217;s all worn out. But then he makes a jacket out of the coat, and which he also wears until it&#8217;s all worn out. He makes a vest, a scarf, a tie, and at last a button&#8230;and when the button is worn out (or lost), he makes a story out of the button. <\/p>\n<p>There are many versions of this old tale, here&#8217;s just a few:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/melissa.depperfamily.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/something-from-nothing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/melissa.depperfamily.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/something-from-nothing.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"something from nothing\" width=\"198\" height=\"255\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1591\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/melissa.depperfamily.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/bit-by-bit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/melissa.depperfamily.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/bit-by-bit.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"bit by bit\" width=\"196\" height=\"257\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1592\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/melissa.depperfamily.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/index.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/melissa.depperfamily.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/index.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"index\" width=\"203\" height=\"248\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1590\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAnd even a Western one:<br \/>\n <a href=\"http:\/\/melissa.depperfamily.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/cows-come-home.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/melissa.depperfamily.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/cows-come-home.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"cows come home\" width=\"198\" height=\"255\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1593\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My favorite is Bit by Bit, but when I wrote my own version to tell, I borrowed ideas from several sources. <\/p>\n<p>And here&#8217;s the rough pattern I developed for my flannel pieces. The &#8220;lightning&#8221; shapes to the sides are lapels:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/melissa.depperfamily.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_4466.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/melissa.depperfamily.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_4466-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"IMG_4466\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1597\" srcset=\"http:\/\/melissa.depperfamily.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_4466-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/melissa.depperfamily.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_4466.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What it looks like all together. (The color I used is due to having leftovers from making Kanga and Roo costumes for my daughter and me.
