In the meantime, here’s the original rhyme. I Googled it and did not find a reference for it; I don’t know whether someone at my library made it up or if they found it in a book somewhere. <\/p>\n
Clickety Clack<\/p>\n
Clickety-one, clickety-one,
\nHere comes ENGINE number one.<\/p>\nClickety-two, clickety-two,
\nHere comes BOX CAR number two.<\/p>\nClickety-three, clickety-three,
\nHere comes PASSENGER CAR number three.<\/p>\nClickety-four, clickety-four,
\nHere comes COAL CAR number four.<\/p>\nClickety-five, clickety-five,
\nHere comes TANK CAR number five.<\/p>\nClickety-clck, clickety-clack,
\nHere comes the CABOOSE!<\/p>\nThe train has gone on down the track,
\nPuffing ’cause it’s going fast.
\nWave good-bye ’cause it’s all past.<\/p><\/blockquote>\nBut I was just at a workshop yesterday during the Colorado Libraries for Early Literacy<\/a> Annual Meeting, and was reminded how critical rhyming skills are to language development and reading readiness. So I wanted to tweak the verse to boost the rhyming power! <\/p>\n
Here’s my version:<\/p>\n
Clickety-Clack<\/p>\n
Clickety-clack, clickety-clack,
\nHere comes the train on the railroad track!<\/p>\nClickety-clunn, clickety-clunn,
\nHere comes ENGINE number one.<\/p>\nClickety-clew, clickety-clew,
\nHere comes COAL CAR number two.<\/p>\nClickety-clee, clickety-clee,
\nHere comes BOX CAR number three.<\/p>\nClickety-clore, clickety-clore,
\nHere comes TANK CAR number four.<\/p>\nClickety-clive, clickety-clive,
\nHere comes COACH CAR number five. <\/p>\nClickety-clicks, clickety-clicks,
\nHere’s the CABOOSE, that’s number six.<\/p>\nClickety-clack, clickety-clack,

Here’s my Train Car pattern<\/a> (pdf). These cars are about 4×6 inches; don’t forget you can scale them down (or up!) on your copier to better fit your flannelboard. <\/p>\n
