The All-Boy Picture Book Post

I helped a patron this week who wanted to write picture books for boys, because he was convinced there was nothing out there but princesses. So he was wrong, of course, and I wanted to send him a list of titles to explore. I asked for help on Facebook & Twitter, to make sure I got past my own personal faves, and a great crew of friends and colleagues pitched in with some super ideas. Several people wanted to see the whole list, so here it goes!

Thanks to Alice, Seth, Bob, Brian (via Anne), Ericka, Susan, Laurie, Lisa, Mary, Alyson, Crystal, Erin, Sue, Will and Simon (via the other Mary), Tracey, Betsy, Kristy, Lori, Jill, Carolyn, Carol & Amy…my patron said, “Let me just say [this list is] awesome and this alone will keep me reading/researching for many months to come.” You guys rock!

Sorry I missed this tweet! What fun! It’s a funny question to me since I feel like I often order too many “boy” books! After raising two boy readers, I just gravitate that direction.

Most of my faves are listed but I would add: anything by Richard Scarry, Commander Toad by Yolen, The Day Jimmy’s Boa Ate the Wash, Red Truck, Fix-It Duck, and The Super Hungry Dinosaur. And I’ve never seen a boy pass up O’Malley’s Captain Raptor books!

Thanks Babette! I was fascinated by his perception of the picture book world. Thanks for your additions!

  4. Susan says:

I still think Max and Ruby.

  5. Melissa says:

D’oh! Missed a few from your list, I know it!

  6. Alyson says:

I am madly adding to good books for young boys list! I will feature it soon.

    Yahoo!

  8. This is wonderful – I’ve printed it out and am going to pass it around my department! I’d add David Shannon to the “almost everything” pile – with the exception of Alice the Fairy, I think all his books are boy books. Too Many Toys and the David books are popular here. The Doghouse by Jan Thomas as well.

  9. Melissa says:

I agree everyone did a great job on this list! David Shannon is definitely a winner, and I pretty much think Jan Thomas can do no wrong. 🙂 Thanks!

  10. Erica says:

I must be a boy! So many of these are my favorites for story time. BECAUSE we can make noises and act things out and be BOYsterous!

  11. Melissa says:

It’s an excellent feeling, isn’t it! Way to go noisy storytimes!

  12. Janet says:

Here are 2 more recently published books to add. My 2 year old grandson loves these:
Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site by Sherri Dusky Rinker
Where Do Diggers Sleep at Night? by Brianna Caplan Sayres
